On the weekend of February 1, the Mount St. Mary’s Women’s Water Polo team, faced contenders such as Bucknell, Saint Francis, Gannon and Austin, at the Virginia Military Institute Invitational. The Mountaineers improved their non-conference record to 6-2.
On Friday the 31, they started the invitational with a 16-12 win against Saint Francis. Rebecca Valentine (C’25) brought the team four goals during the game. Anna Kegel (C’26) was also a key player in this match, with penalty shots and hat tricks.
On Saturday Feb. 1, the Mountaineers began their day with a 10-9 loss to Bucknell. It was a close game, with goals from Beatrice Vieira (C’25), Leilani Horan (C’28), Maria Pascual (5y) and Kegel. Horan was named MAAC Rookie of The Week following this weekend.
Following the Bucknell match, the Mount got a 18-8 victory over Austin. Becca Enquist (C’28) made 13 saves in this game.
On the third day of the invitational, the Mountaineers faced Gannon and got their third victory of the weekend, with a score of 15-10. Horan scored a whopping five goals during the game. Kegel, Valentine, Pasucual and winner of the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, Anita Radaelli, all scored two goals each.
Enquist was a major player in this game as well, rounding out her weekend of playing with another 11 saves.
The Mountaineers have an invitational at Bucknell, where they will face conference opponents, Siena. As well as Mercyhurst, La Salle and Saint Francis.
