On Feb. 27 the Mount Women’s Lacrosse Team played against American University. It was the third non-North East Conference game of the season.
The weather was chilly, yet sunny with a little breeze. Perfect weather for a Lacrosse game. Everything was a little wet from rain earlier that day. Outside of the chaplains for the lacrosse team, the stands were quiet due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The Mount starting line-up included Jordan Butler (C’21), Kate Kinsella (Gr.), Sara Moeller (Gr.), and Alayna Pagnotta (C’21) on attack; Beanie Colson (C’21), Jordan Groover (C’22), Zoe Hulburt (C’21), and Abigail Zeigenfuse (C’23) on midfield; and Kate Bieraugel (C’21), Devon Filippone (C’21), Kaitlyn Ridenour (Gr.), and Jenna Oler (C’21) on defense.
Butler scored the first goal within the first five minutes of the game. American scored their first goal not even two minutes after. Pagnotta scored the Mount’s second goal followed immediately by Moeller scoring the third.
American was in the lead for two minutes before immediately falling behind. Both sides lead decisive charges against the other. The first half of the game consisted of the two teams staying evenly matched until the Mount scored two goals back to back. They played systematically like a well oiled machine. In last five minutes of the first half, they scored four goals. By the end of the first half, the Mount was up by five.
The Mount continued to score throughout the second half, only allowing American to scored three goals- all within the first ten minutes. The Erin Anderson (C’22) scored the final goal of the game with a minute and a half left. The Mount defeated American 19-9 with a running clock.
“We did not play against American last year,” Head Coach Lauren Skellchock said in an email. “[W]e didn’t have them scheduled last year either.”
“We watched game film from [American’s] games last year,” Skellchock stated. “The film allowed us to focus on key players. They have some really skilled players, so we were able to prepare for them.” With the video, the Mount was able to study American’s players and their abilities to better judge themselves and properly prepare for the game.
After two extremely close games earlier this season, this victory was probably what the team needed before their next game.
The Mount will play their first NEC game of the season against Bryant University on Mar. 6 at 1 p.m.
