Rebecca (Becca) Valentine (C’24) is an outstanding student-athlete on the Mount St. Mary’s University's women’s Water Polo team. She is currently pursuing her master's degree, while working as a Graduate Assistant with the school’s Marketing and Communications Department, all while working at our student run cafe, Saxbys.
Earlier this semester, Valentine broke the school’s record for most career points. With her 202 goals and counting, she reflects on achieving this milestone during her final collegiate season.
“I committed to the Mount because I wanted to contribute to the creation and growth of a new team,” she said. “Hitting 200 career goals, as well as breaking the school's all-time scoring record, really made it feel like I had reached my goal and left my mark! It is definitely going to be a big highlight of my overall water polo career that I'll be able to look back on, and it truly did feel amazing to see all the support I received when I hit 200!”
In her final collegiate season, Valentine is feeling bittersweet as water polo has had such a significant impact on her life. Valentine will forever be grateful for her team and the accolades she has collected these last four years.
As the season is slowing down, Valentine expresses that her experience is bittersweet. Water Polo has been a big part of her life, and she is so grateful for her team and the memories she has made over these past four years.
Out of all her seasons, Valentine said that this one has been her favorite, as her team and her have been showing off what they can do. This season the team went 14-12 overall, and in in their most recent game against Long Island University, Valentine scored five of the team’s 12 goals.
When asked what she will miss the most about being on the team, Valentine said, “The biggest thing has to be losing the ability to simply walk on deck and have my teammates so easily turn my day around with a laugh.” She shared, “I have met some of my best friends thanks to this Water Polo team, and I am certainly going to miss all the random singing and cotton eye joe performances before every game!”
With graduation in a few weeks, Valentine’s post-graduation plans are not set in stone, but if you know her, you know she is one that goes with the flow. She has submitted job applications and hopes to work in communications or coaching.
Regardless of what Valentine’s future holds for her, her impact on the Mount community will always be remembered and celebrated!
