New SGA Officers Aim to Strengthen Student Engagement

Mount St. Mary’s University’s Student Government Association nominated two news students to serve in the SGA executive board in leadership positions for 2026 to 2027 school year.  

Mathew Jule (C’29) was nominated to serve as the vice president of finance. He is studying Criminal Justice and considers adding Theology as a second major. He works as a Mount guide and recently became a Japanese language tutor.  

Jule said that he hopes to use this role to gain experience working with students, faculty and SGA executive board. He became interested in joining SGA when Kaysi Moreno-Vigil, the current SGA president suggested he would be a good fit for this position. He mentioned that he wants to improve how SGA manages and documents its finances. “One of my main goals is to manage SGA expenses proactively and appropriately to be better documented and physically budgeted,” said Jule.  

He also added that he wants to create a more organized system for managing funds for student organizations and their events on campus. He suggested that the SGA should set aside emergency funds and increase savings to have flexibility for future events.  

Jule is hoping that his work will make it simple for clubs and organizations to understand their availability and plan accordingly for their event events.  

Erica E. Alfred (C’27), a Business Administration major, was nominated for another SGA leadership position. She has been involved on campus and works at the Palmieri Activities Center. Alfred mentioned that she interned at Seton Center, where she gained administrative, organizational and inventory management skills.

She expressed her interest in an SGA leadership position because she enjoys helping organizations stay on track and provide student support. “I want students to feel like SGA is approachable and that their voices actually,” Alfred said. She suggestedthat increasing SGA’s presence on campus events and social media could encourage more students to participate in events and become an officer for SGA as well.  

Alfred and Jule said they hope that their new positions will allow them to give back to the Mount community. Jule’s vision is for the SGA to make effective decisions about spending and saving their budget while Alfred’s hope is that students at the Mount feel truly heard through the SGA.  Both nominees will serve in their positions during the fall and spring semesters as they begin working with the SGA executive board and student body.
