Matthew Schwanke

The Mount St. Mary’s women’s rugby team has set out in their annual rugby 15s campaign for 2023. Through four games this fall, the women’s rugby team has a record of 1-3. The Mountaineers have lost their last two games, and their last win came on Sept. 9, in a 27-26 win over Princeton.

Their last game was against Army, with the game ending 39-10 in favor of the Black Knights. The Mount played it at home on the Echo Field, where they have not yet won this season. The Mount’s two tries in that game were scored by senior Leah Palmesano (C’24) and graduate student Emma Jacobs.

The Mount has been outscored this season 138-42, with them having scored only more than 10 points once this season. They are led by senior Katherine Stern (C’24) this season with three tries. Two of those came in their lone win against Princeton. Her three tries tied the number of tries she had last season.

The team still has belief that things can change though come their final two games. Tyler Dickens (C’26) said that the team is starting to come together and that the practices are starting to show positive results. Dickens also said that the new coach, Maggie Myles is also a big step in the right direction. She said that she brings great energy and is a “great leader.”

The final two games are against Navy on Oct. 22 and Quinnipiac on Oct. 28. These last two games may prove to be difficult as Navy beat Long Island team that proved very difficult for the Mount. Quinnipiac may be a tough opponent as they beat Navy by a score of 46-3. The Mountaineers’ last home game will be the Quinnipiac game at Echo Field on Oct. 28.
