Black Student Union kicks off the school year with a double event. A day party and trap karaoke in the evening at the PAC.
The first part of the event featured activities such as beep pong, ping pong and card games. BSU was using the grill to provide food and good music for all the attendees. Allowing everyone to engage in fun outside activities to have an enjoyable time.
The BSU board believed this event would be a wonderful opportunity for students and faculty to meet each other and the board as well.
“This event is to bring everyone together, from all backgrounds. I feel like the weather was perfect for this event.” Said Simone Smith (C’25), Public Relations Coordinator of BSU. She also said, “I know all the other clubs are going to start rolling in with their events as the semester goes on. We wanted to make sure ours was big.”
Thurman Zollicoffer (C’25) said, “I believe this event is important because it gives the student body a chance to come together.” Zollicoffer, Secretary of BSU added, “It’s a great time to embrace our culture and hopefully share it with others... These are the people that are going to potentially be in the club for the rest of the year and hopefully after. Just meeting everyone now is going to create great bonds.
With the day party there was also an exciting Trap Music Karaoke event that combined fun with the celebration of Black culture.
Gabriel Nwate (C’24), the BSU President, explained the event’s main goal. Hwate stated, “The purpose of this event is to bring everyone together. Our block party last Thursday introduced the clubs, and this event is a follow-up.”
It’s a chance for both returning and new students to see what the Mount has to offer and start the school year on a positive note. We aim to create a sense of community within the Black student body, plain and simple!
"Trap music was chosen to highlight the event’s cultural significance, Nwate explained.
Inclusivity was a priority for the event. Sarah Sebhatu (C’24), BSU Vice President, addressed initial concerns: “Some challenges included having enough supplies and refreshments, especially since this was our first major event of the semester. We were worried about running out of food, but thankfully, everyone was satisfied.”
Looking ahead, Jahari Miller (C’24), BSU Treasurer, teased future events: “We have a lot in store we got Black Business Expo, movie nights and other exciting activities lined up.Alex Nwokoroku (C’24) said, “We’re here to create enjoyable experiences and foster community.”
The Trap Music Karaoke event was a resounding success, bringing students together to celebrate their different cultures and forge new connections. With plans for more exciting events on the horizon, BSU is poised to continue strengthening the sense of community and vibrancy on campus.
