Fit Mount is Happy Mount

For the fall semester, the Mount’s Athletic Recreation Convocation opened up with excellent new facilities available to all students, staff and community members. Over the past year, Campus Recreation and Student Life worked relentlessly to help students stay healthy and happy throughout lockdown. One of the ways they did this was through fitness classes held over Zoom. The offered courses ranged from yoga to cycling. Workout routines were also posted on the Mount Fitness and Wellness Instagram account @mountfitness_wellness for students to check out.

This year the Mount began offering a wide variety of in-person fitness classes held on weekdays to help individuals maintain a healthy and active routine coming out of lockdown mode. For those interested in cardio, the ARCC offers Cycle Express and Indoor Cycle. Cycle Express is a 30-minute class held on Thursdays and is perfect for people who are seeking a quick but effective spin workout. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, individuals are guided by a fitness instructor through a series of cycling-based exercises for an hour in the Indoor Cycle class.

Inside strength-building classes, students can participate in a 30 or 60-minute barbell workout on Mondays and Thursdays. A Tone & Core class is held from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. on Wednesdays to improve body and muscle tone. Along with improving muscle tone, individuals can improve their endurance with an hour-long Kickbox class on Friday evenings. The fitness classes are made for all levels of fitness, so everyone is welcome to join. For a complete list of classes, visit ARCC Fitness | Mount St. Mary's University (msmary.edu).

Before beginning a class, participants are required to pay a fee and fill out the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q). Once registered for a class, a valid fitness class card through the semester will be provided to the individual. Sign-in for the fitness classes begins 15 minutes before on a first-come-first-serve basis.

While a mask is not required to be worn during fitness classes, proper exercise attire is. When participating in a fitness class or using one of the facilities, full-length shirts, workout pants or shorts and athletic footwear must be worn.

In addition to the in-person fitness classes, the Spin Studio has been converted into a Circuit room that can be found on the lower level of the ARCC. This room features a complete set of circuit weight machines that were previously located in the lower Fitness Center.

For a complete list of both new and old facilities available at the ARCC visit the Health & Fitness page on the Mount’s website or use this link Health & Fitness | Mount St. Mary's University (msmary.edu). The athletic complex is opened from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, and 12-7 p.m. on weekends. Per COVID-19 rules, all visitors must enter through the west sliding doors and show their IDs at the Registration desk. A mask is to be required at all times except for fitness classes or vigorous exercise.
