I walked in thinking I wasn’t easily scared. Little did I know I couldn’t have been further from the truth. Field of Screams (FOS) was nothing less than a great time.
Being my first time at FOS, I was really surprised by the environment. It felt like I was walking through a fall-themed fair. The music blared while people frolicked along the straw-covered ground, walking from attraction to attraction, waiting to get the scare of a lifetime.
There were many different schools and YouTube channels there as well, reporting on the frights FOS has to offer. I met YouTube creators The Scare Factor, who were enjoying the Haunted Hayride just as much as me. I also met and was led through the attractions by junior Katie and senior Dan, both journalists for Stevenson University.
For those who’ve never attended FOS, there are four main attractions: Haunted Hayride, Den of Darkness, Frightmare Asylum and Nocturnal Wasteland. My favorite was definitely the Frightmare Asylum. Each attraction has you follow a frightening path in an attempt to scare you.
Throughout the trail there are fake props, loud sound effects and flashing lights. Volunteers will also be dressed in horrifying costumes, jumping out and chasing you when you least expect it. To some people, this sounds like a nightmare come true.
When asked why they came to FOS, a lively group of scare enjoyers Jasmine, Justin, Amere and Jasaan said they loved the fright. “I wanted to have a fun time and see some scary stuff. I was already here once but wanted to come again to feel frightened.”
When you decide to come to FOS, the scare will be there waiting for you. For those wanting to get out of their dorms this fall and feel a new environment, FOS is where you want to be. “To have a good time and to feel the vibe out,” says Dillon.
As you decide to leave your dorms to come out to FOS, bring all your friends. The attractions are best enjoyed together. Jude had this to say when asked why he came to FOS: “I’ve never gone before and I wanted to go with a bunch of my friends for a scare.”
Leaving campus and experiencing something so fun and different can remind you that life isn’t just classes and deadlines, but also about exploring new places, people and moments that actually stick with you.
