Feb. 1, 2026, began the celebration of Black History Month. BHM was officially created and recognized by the U.S. government in 1976 by President Gerald Ford. February marks the month to celebrate and recognize the important contributions to the nation made by historic Black figures. We shine the spotlight on civil rights trailblazers, innovators, doctors, educators, heroes and leaders, professional athletes and so many more who have paved the way for the following generations.

I had the opportunity to talk to Tamiya Parker, the 2026 vice president of the Black Student Union at Mount St. Mary’s University, about what BHM and BSU mean to her and some upcoming events BSU is hosting.

“In my opinion, I believe that Black History Month is meant to remind ourselves about the complexities but beauty of diversity. Meaning that the Black community is so diverse in regard to the creativity and style in fashion, art, hair, music and overall cultural expression. Our history could be defined as an authentic one, with the many significant figures that paved the way socially and politically. We are meant to embrace the good and bad of the past while continuing to break barriers in the present and future. Most importantly, to remind ourselves that diversity will forever be a strength, not a threat.”

Parker then goes on to express how BSU and her role have impacted her, stating, “Being part of BSU, as well as being vice president for the 2025-2026 school year, means the world to me.”

The club has brought her comfort and a sense of belonging and unity since freshman year. It allows her to be rooted in culture and tradition even while being away from home. She’s proud to be a part of the Black community and of her role as vice president and understands the importance of continuing to make progress on and off campus regarding topics like social justice and educating others on ongoing topics.

The BSU is a club that gives students the opportunity to live in the moment and never lose sight of the community they are a part of, as well as the chance to indulge in great food, music and share laughs with others. BSU had a few upcoming events in February, starting with a “Celebrity Wannabe” event in the Knott Auditorium from 7:30-9 p.m. Feb. 11, 2026.

On Feb. 18, 2026, they hosted a Sip n’ Paint night, and they ended the month with a Black History Month trivia event. More details will be announced within a few weeks about more events they have planned. Including their yearly fashion show that you can see later in the spring. You can stay updated on upcoming events by following the BSU Instagram @msmu_bsu, as well as the emails received from Mount Messenger in your Outlook inbox.

The article speaks beautifully about diversity being a strength within BSU. The idea has sold well to the general community at MSMU. Yet professionalism, unity, and progess has been called to question. It should be noted that those values should be reflected consistently in practice, not just in words.

A great article and I'm glad BSU still exists at MSMU after I helped establish BSU fifty years old.
